3D-printed slope stairs as part of major maintenance works on Schiphol’s Buitenveldertbaan runway

During the busy summer months of 2025, Heijmans Infra carried out major maintenance works on the Buitenveldertbaan runway at Schiphol Airport. An intensive operation, especially right in the peak season of air traffic. A tightly coordinated schedule and close collaboration between all parties involved were therefore essential. In addition, sustainability played a central role. Efficiency and sustainability were key reasons for Heijmans to opt for 3D-printed slope stairs in this project.

Renovation of the Buitenveldertbaan runway: efficient and sustainable

In just twenty weeks, Heijmans Infra completed the comprehensive renovation of this runway. The works included replacing asphalt layers, cables and pipelines, installing new markings and lighting, and upgrading the drainage system. Everything was executed with maximum efficiency and with full consideration of the sustainability goals set by both Schiphol and Heijmans.

Our contribution: 3D-printed slope stairs
In addition to the efficiency of our 3D concrete-printed slope stairs, they also align seamlessly with the project’s sustainability ambitions. The stairs contain no reinforcement and require approximately 50% less concrete compared to traditional steps or prefab stair elements. This significantly reduces both material use and CO₂ emissions.
Another sustainable aspect is the reuse of existing concrete curbs, which in this project served as stringers for the stairs. This circular approach was applied in several parts of the project and contributes to a lower environmental impact.

Runway Buitenveldertbaan ready for the future
Thanks to the meticulously organized planning and execution by Heijmans Infra, Schiphol now has a fully refurbished and future-proof runway. The Buitenveldertbaan is once again ready for safe and reliable use for many years to come.
