A slopestair as a link between technology and nature at De Poel

An impressive project has been completed at 's-Heer Abtskerke: the new construction of pumping station De Poel. Commissioned by the Waterschap Scheldestromen and executed by Van Boekel Bouw & Infra B.V., a modern solution has been realized here that seamlessly combines functionality and ecology. A key component is the staircase, consisting of two elements measuring 7380x1200 mm, which provides access to an innovative fish passage. This passage not only supports the migration of various fish species, but with advanced cameras it also provides valuable insights into the local ecosystem.

The fish passage is a striking element within the project. Thanks to this facility, fish such as eel and stickleback are given free rein to migrate between the Westerschelde and surrounding waters. The slope stair is not only a practical addition for access, but is also a visual element that blends in with the natural environment. This shows the power of cooperation between innovative technology and respect for nature, a vision that Waterschap Scheldestromen holds dear.

With the completion of the pumping station and fish passage in the spring of 2024, a step is taken towards a robust and sustainable design of the environment. This project proves that practical solutions can contribute to both strengthening infrastructure and improving biodiversity. An inspiring example of technology in harmony with the landscape.
